Guess who is growing their business during the pandemic? Organized cybercrime entities… yes, you are reading that correctly. Listen to the Help Me With HIPAA podcast: Cyberattacks coming from inside the network (Ep 258) to hear how likely these cybercriminals are to be detected and prosecuted in the United States. Hint hint… it is not good.
In this podcast episode, Donna and David discuss how cyberattacks are coming from inside your own networks. As soon as I heard this fun little tidbit, all I could hear in my head was, Ring Ring, “Jill, this is Sargent Sacker, listen to me, we have traced the call and it is coming from inside the house……..” This entire episode is filled with all the tricky ways cybercriminals are stepping up their game to steal your data.
What do we need to do to help protect ourselves? We have to stop playing defense and start playing offense. We need to ask our MSP’s what they are doing to stop the criminals? Yeah, maybe they are running security reports for you, but are they actually looking and analyzing the reports? Are they keeping up with and installing the security patches? Did you know that the number one most effective, and less expensive, thing you can do to protect your business is to conduct security awareness training with your staff? Most hackers are being let into your network by someone clicking on a malicious link or plugging their phone into their computer to charge it. Yes, their phone could have been hacked or there might be malicious software on it without them even knowing.
David quoted Albert Einstein, “We can’t solve problems using the same kind of thinking when we created them.” We all have to start thinking differently or we are never going to be able to protect ourselves. Urge your tech teams to take these threats seriously and not assume that old tools will find and prevent these new attacks.
